HYTEN-O OLMESARTAN
Mode of Actions:
- Olmesartan is used in the treatment of high blood pressure.
- Olmesartan is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure in adults and children 6 years of age and older.
- Olmesartan is in a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the action of certain natural substances that tighten the blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump more efficiently.
- High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body.
- Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems.
Indications:
Type of medicine : An angiotensin-II receptor antagonist.
Uses : High blood pressure.
- Olmesartan is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, to lower blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions.
- These benefits have been seen in controlled trials of antihypertensive drugs from a wide variety of pharmacologic classes including the class to which this drug principally belongs. There are no controlled trials demonstrating risk reduction with Olmesartan.
- Olmesartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It works by blocking the hormone angiotensin thereby relaxing blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump more efficiently.
What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking olmesartan?
- You should not take olmesartan if you are allergic to it.
- If you have diabetes, do not use olmesartan together with any medication that contains aliskiren (Amturnide, Tekturna, Tekamlo). You may also need to avoid taking olmesartan with aliskiren if you have kidney disease.
- To make sure olmesartan is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: liver disease; congestive heart failure; or if you are dehydrated.
- Do not use if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant, stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away.
- Olmesartan can cause injury or death to the unborn baby if you take the medicine during your second or third trimester.
- It is not known whether olmesartan passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are taking olmesartan.
Side effects:
Common side effects of olmesartan are Dizziness, Back pain, Sinus inflammation, Increased potassium level in blood.
